England’s coach, Andy Flower, has told his underperforming batsmen there is no place to hide after two poor performances in the third Test at The Oval allowed Pakistan to pull the four-match series scoreline back to 2-1 with just the decider at Lord’s to come this week. On a good batting track, England suffered collapses in each innings, including a remarkable subsidence of 7 for 28 second-time around, to muster scores of 231 and 222, as Pakistan held their nerve to win a tense contest by four wickets.
Umar Gul doubtful for fourth Test

Pakistan’s pace bowler Umar Gul is racing against time to get fit for the fourth and final Test against England commencing at Lord’s from Thursday.

Thursday. Pakistan team manager Yawar Saeed confirmed from London that Gul had recovered 90 per cent from his hamstring injury that ruled him out of the third Test, which Pakistan won at the Oval last week.

“He has recovered well and looks certain to play in the one-day series next month. But we will know in next 24 hours if he can also be fit for the fourth Test as well,” Yawar said.

Gul, one of Pakistan’s most experienced bowlers, picked up the hamstring injury during the second Test at Edgbaston and has been advised rest for three to four weeks.

But Yawar said the pace bowler had made a rapid recovery from his injury and would undergo fresh fitness tests and MRI scans.

Although England have shown faith with their team by naming the same 11 players plus the nominal12th man, Tim Bresnan, Flower knows that his players have to front up if they are to avoid squandering a series victory that seemed preordained when they went 2-0 up after the second Test with a nine-wicket win at Edgbaston. “On the batting side, I thought we underperformed without a doubt,” he said. “On a good Oval pitch, scores of 230 and 220 weren’t good enough to win a Test match, and we need to produce better results, simple as that.”

Having bowled Pakistan out for 80 and 72 in the first two games of the series at Trent Bridge and Edgbaston, England’s own batting frailties had been masked to a certain degree. “I think the first two pitches we played on were very tricky surfaces,” said Flower. “So they would undoubtedly have contributed to collapses. But as a batting team we need to produce better results, simple as that. Lord’s should provide us with a very good opportunity to put things right and it is the responsibility of all of us to make sure that happens.”

Despite conceding a first-innings deficit of 75, England were inching back into command of the game at 156 for 2, with Alastair Cook ending a season-long batting drought with his 13th Test century. But once he was dismissed, caught down the leg-side for 110, the innings lost its momentum and the twin dismissals after tea of Kevin Pietersen and the well-set Jonathan Trott proved decisive in the final analysis.

“At The Oval, although we won the toss and batted, they were still quite trying conditions,” said Flower. “But in the second innings there were no excuses whatsoever. We set up a brilliant platform through Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott and we performed poorly after that. Any batting collapse is concerning and there have been too many of them.”

Nevertheless, Cook’s return to form, and the steady tempo that Trott displayed in his three-and-a-half-hour 36, were pleasing to Flower, who believes that – while Cook’s innings was a more aggressive affair than he is used to producing – both men have the ability to buck the current trend of fast and aggressive Twenty20-influenced scoring, for the greater benefit of their team. “There is a different style of batting in international cricket these days,” said Flower. “It is without doubt more attacking, and with that has come a heavier percentage of results and shorter games.

“We thought that when Trott played an obdurate innings in our second innings and it was looked at as very rare and questioned by certain people. That was good, old-fashioned Test match batting. I thought it was quite a good example of how attitudes to strike rates in Test cricket have changed.

“Cook is quiet but he is quietly strong,” he added. “After failing in the first innings and having a rough time of it recently, I think it was a courageous knock filled with really exciting strokeplay. He is a tough young man and that is why he has the record he has. But he has got to back that up now, at Lord’s and into the future.”

The man whom Flower was most impressed by, however, was England’s wicketkeeper and No.7, Matt Prior, who followed up his century in the second innings at Trent Bridge with a vital 84 not out that dug England out of a big hole at 94 for 7 on the first day at The Oval. “He’s looking probably the most organised I’ve seen him as a batsman since he started playing international cricket,” said Flower. “Graham Gooch and he have worked hard at the basics of batting and I think we can see the results of some of those hours in training.”

Despite the Oval loss, Flower was confident that his players would bounce back with a strong performance. “Lord’s should provide us with a very good opportunity to put things right and it is the responsibility of all of us to make sure that happens,” he said. “Once the boys step over the boundary it is their job to embrace that responsibility and be skilful enough to deal with the pressures of international cricket. I think we’re underperforming. I think our batsmen believe that as well. And they will be doing everything to put that right.”

India face New Zealand in the last league match of the tri-nation tournament also involving the hosts, Sri Lanka, at Dambulla on Wednesday the 25th of August. The Lankans have already cemented their spot in the finals and the winner of this contest will join them. Both teams have won a game each, but the Indians have lost two of their games, whereas the Kiwis had one of their games washed out by rain. New Zealand are currently in second place in the table and in case this match is washed away too, they will advance to the final. The teams last met in the opening match of this tournament and on that occasion, the Kiwis notched up a comprehensive victory by 200 runs. Batting under lights has usually been difficult at Dambulla and the teams winning the toss have usually decided to bat first. However, three of the four matches that produced results ended in favour of the team batting second. Hence, the captain winning the toss might think twice before electing to bat again in this series.

India’s batting has not quite delivered in this tournament. They have been bowled out twice for very low totals, 88 and 103, and even in the match they won, it was Virender Sehwag’s brilliance that saw them through. Virat Kohli has got just a single match in the tournament so far, and the management might consider the case of picking him instead of either Rohit Sharma or Dinesh Karthik, both of whom are yet to make a meaningful contribution.

Sehwag has been India’s best batsman on the tour by a fair margin. His form has been good for quite sometime and if he gets his eye in, the Kiwi bowlers might have a tough time. Karthik and Rohit haven’t done much in the series and one of them might have to give up his place. Kohli started off as an opener, but in recent times he has usually played in the middle order and hence if he does come in, in all probability it will be Rohit Sharma who will have to face the axe. Yuvraj Singh’s form was pretty much the only positive that came out of the humiliating 8-wicket defeat against Sri Lanka. His timing looked good and he was striking the ball cleanly. Yuvraj hasn’t had a good year with the bat and a big knock from him is certainly due. With the top order failing to deliver, Suresh Raina and Mahendra Singh Dhoni have had to walk out much earlier than they would have liked, but neither has managed to spend some time in the middle. Players of their calibre are far too good to fail on such a consistent basis and the team will hope that if there is yet another top order collapse, at least one of the two will come good.

Praveen Kumar and Ashish Nehra have looked sharp with the new ball and they have also managed to get some quick wickets. The duo has also bowled well in the death overs. Ishant Sharma wasn’t in great form coming to this tour, but he has improved steadily and now he seems to have got his rhythm back. The spinners haven’t always done as well as Dhoni would have liked. They allowed the Kiwis to take control of the game in the middle overs and that was what cost India the opening match. However, they came back well in the first battle with Sri Lanka and played an important role in India’s victory. They were barely required in India’s latest debacle against the Lankans, and it would be unfair to make wholesale changes based on that.

Team New Zealand:

The New Zealand started the tournament with a massive win against India, but they couldn’t keep up the momentum and were defeated by the hosts. New Zealand too had an injury setback and Martin Guptill was rested in the abandoned game against Sri Lanka. However, he should be fit for this game and hence Peter Ingram will in all probability miss out.

Bradley Watling made an impressive half-century on his debut against the hosts and that is surely enough to earn him another game. However, Kane Williamson has not had a very rewarding debut series thus far. He will definitely be looking to make an impression if he wants to stay in contention for a spot in the World Cup squad. Ross Taylor and Scott Styris are the two senior most campaigners in the squad, and their performance might have a significant impact on the outcome of the match. New Zealand’s lower middle-order is not the best around in the world. In Jacob Oram, they do have a big man who can strike some hefty blows late in the innings. But the likes of Grant Elliot and Gareth Hopkins don’t strike a lot of fear into the opposition. However, that doesn’t mean that they lack the talent and India will do well not to ignore them.

Kyle Mills and Daryl Tuffey gave India’s top order a tough time in the opening match. Both of them can swing the ball and extract some extra bounce from the wicket. India were demolished in their previous match by a medium-pacer, Thisara Perera. That will keep Oram and Styris very interested. The duo had good spells in the abandoned match against Sri Lanka and they kept the hosts in check after the opening bowlers had leaked a few runs. They take the pace off the ball and hence are not the easiest to go after. Nathan McCullum has been picked as the first choice spinner ahead of Jeetan Patel probably because of the fact that he is a much better batsman. The Indians are traditionally good players of spin and he will have to be at his best to keep the batsmen quiet.

His form hasn’t been too good over the past year or so, and injuries and fitness problems haven’t helped a lot. Yuvraj will be desperate to make a big contribution and silence his critics.

Ross Taylor: Taylor has been New Zealand’s best batsman over the past couple of years. He is an excellent player of spin and is among the hardest hitters of the cricket ball in the world at present. He played a captain’s knock in the opening match against India and another similar innings from him might take his team to the final.
